The fire rating of a safe is determined by how long it can be expected to protect the contents when the exerior of the safe is exposed to 2000 degF.
Generally a 2 or 2.5 hour rating is recommended for valuable family records.
It is also not a good practice to store cash, negotiable instruments or family records in the same safe as firearms and ammunitions.
Also, most home safes have provision to install mounting bolts through the base of the safe into concrete or floor joists to deter theives from just carrying the safe away to work on it someplace else.
