no, I'm not suggesting cedar siding. you could use a second run of siding. siding can be fastened withh 2 1/2 inch nails or even two inch. framing nailers set the nails below the surface of the wood. coil nailers also set the nailhead below the surface, so you'll be going back over them with a putty to fill in the nail holes. a regular hammer you can adjust the penetration of nailing. for siding you start with a double run from the bottom and determine your reveal [the part you see] then you make a [story pole] a horizontal board nailed at the height you want your clapboards to go. you set your clapboards on this storyboard (pole) and nail through the thick part of the siding about a 1/2 inch from the edge.
