there's NO WAY you know if a substance is asbestos. If you have doubts about material, first soak it with water and take a sample to your county extension office or an asbestos testing facility. asbestos is friable, meaning it breaks apart into hazardous fibers that resist chemical reduction. only way to see if it is asbestos is to examine it under a microscope. asbestos fibers have a particular footprint when viewed this way.
