Need help and/or ideas

We have an older York A/C- gas heat central unit at our house. The heat keeps cutting out and there is a solid red light that comes on and locks it out. When a local repairman comes out, he can reset it and it will work for anywhere from a couple of hours to a week. This past week we had to run the heat at night and even turned the air on a couple of days that it got really warm. Anyway, the repairman is sure we need to replace the controller board, the only problem is, I don't have $300 right now to replace it. Is there someplace online that may have older parts at a little bit of a discount. Also, what are the advantages/disadvantages of using a universal board where a lot of stuff has to be re-wired in order to work properly.

Thanks!
