the motherboard has a device called a triac. this is a solid state device that varies the voltage going to the brush less dc motor in the freezer compartment. it makes noises when it operates. it's continually being gated on and off according to voltage needs. some battery operated drills actually make a noise when they operate just like the triac.
SCRs or silicone controlled rectifiers also make a heck of a lot of noise when they're controlling something.
