It was the valve.
The problem gradually got worse untill the furance wasnt relighting at all after I would shut it down. Not knowing what else to do, I took the handle of a screwdriver and tapped it on the valve that is controlled by the thermostat. The furnace light right up every time for the next couple days. Then it would be the same thing; wouldnt light unless you gave the valve a tap.
I went to the local heating and cooling repair guys and had a new valve in 5 days for $55 or so. I put the valve on myself, but didnt trust myself to take apart and clean the old gas valve.
I would take HayZee's advice and check for recalls too.
