disposal issues

my disposal was making the humming sound which i assumed meant a blockage. i used the wrench to rotate the blades underneath the unit, and this provides momentary relief. the unit will run properly for maybe 10 seconds, and then the humming noise starts again. am i just not rotating the blades enough? or is the blockage so large that the unit might need to be removed and cleaned manually. thank you for any help.

Crank it back and forth vigourously in both directions, a broom handle may also help. Here's a link to give you some tips:

If it's plugged with noodles, onion peels, celery stalks or the like you may have to remove it and try that way.
