Help! I have been having trouble with my in sink disposal. It stops working like it's jammed but there is NOTHING in there! We have used the reset button, used the allen wrench which we can get to go around basically freely, but there is still something causing the disposal to jam. It will work for a few seconds and then nothing.

Before you begin, for personal safety unplug the disposal motor.

When you look down inside a disposal you are actually looking at the top surface of the rotating grinder wheel. The actualy grinding action takes place on the side of the wheel which grinds against a mating surface on the inner wall of the disposal body. The two movable bars on the top of the wheel which are commonly thought to be the cutters are actually slinger bars that are intended to throw the material to the outer edge of the wheel where it is pulled into the grinding surface.

Using a flashlight, examine the outer circumference of the rotating wheel carefully for any sign of a hard foreign object in the groove between the wheel and the disposal body. If you happen to see anything use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it out. If you do not see a foreign object try rotating the cutter wheel with the disposal wrench while examining the groove.

If you are unable to find the problem in that manner, remove the drain connection from the disposal body and look in the drain hole. You will be looking at the side of the cutter wheel. Try rotating the cutter wheel while looking in the drain port and you should find the object. As soon as you find the object, pull it out, replace the drain port, plug the unit it and test run it,

Thank you!! It works perfectly now. The culprit was a very old, very beat up dime. No telling how long it had been in there.
