Relays are different Just a quick ?

Hi guys, I have a Kenmore (Whirlpool) fridge, Mod. #106.50569991 Manufacture date 2000 06. The other day on the weekend of course it stopped cooling. The commpressor was hot the condenser fan was running, but the combo commpressor relay, overload, start switch was just giving a click every 3 minutes but would not start the commpressor. I figured the combo switch was bad. On monday, today, I replaced the part # 2204307 with it's replacement part # 2261636.The part looks the same except that it has 3 prongs for wires to attach, while the original only had 2. One red and one white. Do I need to jumper the extra termanail? Any help I would be thankful for. My food is in my fridge in the garage taking up beer space.

You may have just discovered why your original relay was not working.

A compressor has 3 terminals, common, start and run and it is vitally important the the wires from the relay be installed on the correct terminals.

Absolutely do not install any jumpers on a compressor.

I know the commpressor has three termanails I ment the relay. I took it apart and discovered that it is the same internally, mut have changed it to be interchangable with others. Any way after installing the combanation relay, overload, starter, it still made no atempt to start. No fan, no click, nothing. I thought maybe it had to cycle or something. While I waited I read one of your other replies LP and you helped me solve my problem. The unit was in the defrost cycle. Hit the defrost cycle button and she started up. Thanks for the help.

You have the wrong relay

Where did you get the part # 2204307 from? The relay for your model fridge should be # 2204413 which now is substituted to # 2261637 which can be seen at the following link. It is a 2-terminal design.

Dan O, part # # 2204307 was the original start relay that I removed. Part # # 2204307 is the one installed at the factory. Whirlpool's site lists #2262636 as it's replacement. It has been running fine for the past 16 hours, seems to be cycling. Do think there is cause for concern. Thanks. [?]

Was that the number stampted right on the part or did you look it up in a parts list?

In the parts list for your model, # 2204413 is called for which is now substituted to # 2261637 which is a 2-terminal design.

Maybe not. The relays with the extra terminal are for models that use an additional capacitor. The relays may be interchangeable otherwise I don't know. We always install the correct one.

DanO, That number #2204307 was stamped on the part. It only had two termanails. The plastic housing was the same as the three termanail part #2261636. The housing on the original had the slot for the termanail, it just didn't have the termanail. It seems fine 24 hours now. Thanks for your time.
