Hotpoint dryer spins but only heats intermittently

I have a Hotpoint dryer (model DLL1550BGLWH)that spins well but only heats about every fifth time I run the thing. I have three kids under the age of five. This is an urgent plea for help! I've checked hoses and don't see any lint clogs.

The first step would usually be to check to see exactly what the gas burner's ignitor (glow coil) is doing *at the times the dryer won't heat*.

If you're unfamiliar working on dryers and you want to attempt to repair it yourself, you might considering getting a repair manual for it. Hotpoint appliance are built by GE. GE has a very good consumer oriented repair manual for their dryers (see the following link).
