Kenmore Freezer running continuously

Unit is running continuously. Is cooling inside, but never getting cold enough to shut off. measures 26-28 degrees F inside. Its roughly 7 years in service, manufactured in 10/98. Ideas?

I would suspect one of three problems...
1. The condenser coils are plugged up with dust and debris.
2. The condenser fan motor is not turning properly
3. The cardboard cover is off the mechanic compartment on the back of the machine on the bottom...(In addition to covering the compressor and mechanical equipment that cardboard cover is an intergral part of the air flow ducting for the condenser coil.

Is the interior fan running when the compressor is?

Is the interior light(s) shutting off when the door is closed?

BTW. LazyPup's suggestions are not applicable to the design of freezer you have which uses a 'static' condenser up the back of the appliance. They don't usually get plugged and there is no forced air for it.

I'm having a similar problem with an antique Coldspot freezer. Mine also has a static condensor. The difference is that mine doesn't seem to be getting cold enough. Only today within the past week has it gotten below freezing. Maybe you should check your thermostat to make sure it's still operating properly. A bad thermostat can stop a fridge or freezer from shutting off.

I believe the fan is running properly, and to check the light I would just depress the plunger switch.

It had a cover inside the freezer - is there anything to check inside the freezer after this is removed?

You can check the 'frost pattern' on the evaporator coil as described toward the end of the page at this link:

Some of the other things mentioned in that page about refrigerators should also apply to your frost free freezer... besides the condenser information which is not the kind used on your particular model. Also, a plugged drain will not usually cause cooling problems in a freezer the way it can in a refrigerator.

If this is a FREEZER, he speaks of and not a refrigerator /freezer...and it is running and running at the temp he says, it sounds low on refrigerant.

The same could be true for a frost-free refrigerator. Both are basically similar appliances and suffer the same problems.

That is one possibility, yes. Depending on what the appearance of the evaporator is, it could very well indicate a sealed refrigeration system problem... although not necessarily low on refrigerant which is actually fairly rare.
