garbage disposal stuck on

Hi -

I have an Insinkerator model Pro 17 34 horsepower. I just bought a house and it was already here so I don't know the age. It uses a metal plunger to turn on and off with a twist motion. The trouble is, it twists on, then I can't get it to shut off. It has happened once before and I jiggled it for about 2 minutes and finally got it to stop. Tonight it got stuck on and I worked on it for about a half an hour. I also shut it off at the circuit breaker but when I turn the breaker back on it restarts.

Is there a trick to working the plunger? Do you know if they wear or if the plastic trigger sleeve inside can wear?
