GE Refridgerator

I have a GE refridgerator, freezer compartment up top, model TBX 16SSXRAD, serial no. GM 795285.

The freezer compartment is freezing. The lower refridgerator compartment for cooling is not coolling. I see condensation on the top of the compartment which simply means there is a wide range temp differential. The light works, and the switch turns off the light when switch is on closed position.

I turned the temp sensor screw to off position and it shut off compressor.

What you guys think? Fan or temp sensor or something?

IS the fan going?

*HOW* cold is the freezer?

Can you feel any (cold) air blow through where it is supposed to blow through, at the top-back of the refrigerator? If not, you may have ice backed up and may need to thaw it out with a hair dryer. Maybe your defrost drain line is all filled with goo and it backed up and is not draining into the bottom pan, and has frozen up top. Clear out the drain line. If there is a rubber or plastic cup at the back where the drain line starts, you can pull these out and use a car vaccum tube (buy some at auto supply store) that fits the hole and blow through it and root around inside with like a pipe cleaner. You can also pull the refrigerator away from the wall, and get ahold of the drip pan end of the drain line and blow *UP* it, after you have hair dryered the ice away.

I don't have a temp gage to check freezer compartment but everything is frozen hard. I do not feel a fan blowing in the lower compartment.

In some GE fridge models if the defrost water drain was plugged, water could pool in the bottom of the freezer compartment where it will eventually freeze. That ice could cause the ceiling of the fridge compartment to get colder than normal which might account for the condensation. The ice could also block air ducts into the fridge compartment resulting in the higher than normal temperatures you report having.

Im cleaning it out as we speak and going to defrost the entire unit.

Ok we are making progress. I removed the back panel in the freeaer compartment on top. I plugged in the unit and the fan was not moving. I gave the fan blade a twirl and the fan started blowing. Looking at it, I then understood somewhat how these things worked. I then felt for air flow below with the shroud on and and did not feel air flow in lower compartment. I stuck my finger in the flow pipe between upper compartment and lower compartment and found it to be frozen. I will thaw this out right now with a hair dryer.

How am I doing so far?

Okay we found problem. I checked with my Fluke and have 120 vac to the fan, the fan won't run,hence need new evaporator fan.

I really messed up. I priced out the evap. fan, found a great deal replacement OEM model on Ebay and bought it. I removed the old fan from the housing and installed the new fan and tested it. The blade would not turn in which I pulled the blade away from the bushing and it worked fine.

It dawned on me this might be the problem with the old fan. So I tested the old fan without the blade and it ran fine.

I removed the new fan and installed the old fan. I adjusted the clearence and assembled the Refrig. all back together.

Runs well now. I'm going to put that new fan back and Ebay and try and sell it.

I't just ticked me off at myself that I should have checked the clearence first. The tale-tale sign was that I rotated the blade and did get it going when I originally diagnosed it.

I'm venting and typed this to discipline myself for being an idiot. Oh well...

That is one of the problem with buying on eBay, usually no returns. I hope you can sell off the replacement without too much of a loss.

The online parts supplier at the following link will accept most electrical parts for return, even it they've been installed! Most other companies will not usually accepted such items back so you really need to be sure what you need before ordering.
