A timer isn't usually "tested" per se. Usually it is just assumed to be the problem if the rest of the other components which could be responsible for the trouble, test Ok.

Metals timers usually have an inspection plate which can be removed to view the timer contacts and internal cam. If any contacts where burned or pitted, it could point to a problem with the timer (although a visual inspection is no guaranty). The cam could also be visually inspected for burns or melted areas.

Lastly, the appliance's wiring diagram should have a 'timing chart' showing which contacts open and close and when. If you've got enough time on your hands, you might be able to test them... but as I stated, testing timers is not usually done in the field.

Wash action switch

No Dan I mean the wash action switch.Per doagram it is wired between timer and motor and I am wondering could this be the problem. I would think not it just being a switch but the wiring makes me ? it.
So how does one check a wash action switch out.

I'm afraid I have never heard of a "wash action switch" and don't have a wiring diagram to look at. Maybe it is referring to the motor speed selector switch on the console panel?

If so, that switch should just be a multiple throw switch which has a common terminal and several separate terminals, one for each of the motor speeds. That common terminal should close to each of the other terminals (which lead to the various motor windings) as the switch is turned. Of course, the switch's switching action should be illustrated on the wiring diagram.

If it was defective in a way causing several motor windings to be energized at the same time, it could possibly cause the symptoms you reported in your other forum messages.

DAN , I think that could be it as the switch had been defective in fact for the longest time if you put it on heavy duty it would not run, only on normal. My daughter had a friend over she used the machine put it on heavy duty over stuff it and since it only starts and stops seconds later, wait and reset and it will or will not run again etc.etc.
? how do I check out this wash action switch?

As I stated, I do not know what this wash action switch is so I couldn't say how to test it. If it is in fact the motor speed selector switch, testing it could only be determined by using the appliance's wiring diagram to see how it is suppose to switch and then checking the opening and closing of the switch contacts involved with an ohm meter or continuity tester.

That could be it... or the 'heavy duty' winding in the motor (which I assume would be the high speed?) defective.

I think it is a speed switch, however my machine has named it a wash action switch, that sends out 4 settings with 8 combinations of lo/ol,hi/lo,hi/hi and lo/hi to the motor and the switch has 5 contacts.
Question how to test for defect in switch.

How *I* might test it is as follows:

3. Look at the wiring diagram to see which contacts are suppose to open and close at what switch settings.

4. Check those contacts for continuity using a ohm meter or continuity tester.

5. Repeat for each of the switch positions... unless one contact has already been found to be defective in which case go immediately to step # 6.

6. If a contact in the switch is found to not be operating according to the wiring diagram, replace the switch.

7. Done!
