Maytag washer

I have a maytag washer, top load (MAV6457AWW) that would stop at any cycle, if left alone would start back up. Now it will come on for a minute then stop. It also has a burn't rubber or burn't motor smell. Motor will run when belt is removed. The timer makes noises with the button pushed in or pulled out.

if the motor runs without the belt then I would say the washer's transmission is jammed. with the belt on and a jammed tub, the motor never gets a chance to get past the start winding part. eventually the motor will burn out. it also draws a lot of currect when it starts which probably is causing the noises in your timer.

More accurate symptom details are needed before an accurate suggestion of problem cause can be suggested.

Does it "stop" even at fill or just when the motor should be running like wash or spin???

If only when the motor should be running, will it stop in both wash AND spin or just one or the other?

What happens with the timer at that time? Does it stop moving too or does it continue to advance through the rest of the cycle like the machine should be working??

If it is only the motor that stops at some point when it should be running, the motor may be overheating and cutting out on its internal overload protector... for whatever reason. What that reason could be would depend on *exactly* what operation it is suppose to be doing at the time(s) it stops.

It also has a burnt rubber or burnt motor smell.

That could be from the motor overheating. It could also be from the belt. What condition is it in? Any signs of burn spots or 'chunks' missing on its inner surface?

If you can clarify and expand upon the exact symptom(s), we may be able to offer a reasonable suggestion as to its cause.
