Drainage for a new dishwasher

Hello, I just bought a Kenmore Elite dishwasher. However, I had to postpone the installation as the person who came to install the new dishwasher says that it is not possible to drain the new dishwasher the same way as the old one. The old dishwasher drains through the floor directly into the plumbing in the crawl basement. However, I was told that the new dishwasher cannot drain this way and it has to be connected to the disposal under the sink. For this he will have to run a pipe through the cabinetry, etc. And it will cost $150.

Can someone please explain why the new dishwasher cannot drain the same way as the old one? Am I being taken for a ride? Thanks?

all dishwashers drain through an air loop which is above the bottom of the sink basin. common term for this is a vacuum breaker and mounts in the fourth hole on a stainless steel basin or one has to be cut out to accomodate it. The drain line goes in one side and the discharge goes to the side pipe of the disposal.

The following link should give you an idea. Your previous model must have had an anti-syphon device built into it.

It does not *have to be* connected to a disposal or even the plumbing under a sink to function properly but the drain hose can not go straight through the floor on most models of dishwashers. An air gap (see the following link) should probably be able to be installed *at counter height* and then from there routed though the floor if you wanted (depending on local building codes - check with a licenced plumber or building inspector).

Typically an air gap is installed on the edge of a sink so connecting to the house plumbing from there is most logical.
