Did the technician have the board with him? Is the hassle of dealing with GE and their tech worth it not to just get a new board off ebay for $50ish and self installing? I know the noise is driving me insane so your tech's assessment of "people just live with it" shows a poor attitude on his part.

I would expect a GE factory authorized service technician (or any servicer that comes across of these models regularly - they're pretty wide spread... unfortunately) to carry one in ' truck stock'. Someone that only sees them on an occasional basis might not.

That will be up to you to decide. One thing you might consider is buying the part from other than a regular GE parts supplier will void any warranty the part might have (usually 90-days to 1-year). That part warranty is at least a little protection.

I do not know what criteria they use to decide which appliances will be covered for any pricing consideration for that issue, likely at the very least the complete model and serial number of the product.
Try calling them with your product information. It is pointless for us to guess as it will be totally up to GE.

That is not a certainty until actually diagnosed but it is a pretty good possibility if your fridge is one of GE's electronically controlled models.
Let us know how you eventually make out.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to share my experience. I have a ~ 3.5yr old GE side by side fridge model # GSS25JPFJ that developed the infamous droning / howling noise coming from the evaporator fan. I could stand it no more! After reading this and other forums I called GE to see if they could help. I finally got routed to the GE Customer Relations department and described the problem. I asked about a warranty extension on the main control board & after being placed on hold a couple of times, I was told that I was eligible for a out of warranty repair (labor & parts). The GE repair guy came out, replaced the board and we've had no problems since. My wife said he spent more time looking for the part in his van than it took him to actually install it. The fridge is back to making its original noises!
You can reach GE Customer Relations at 800-386-1215. Worse case is they say no & you are out 5-10minutes of time.
YMMV. Good luck!

GE Built-In Refrigerator with Howling Evaporator Fan
Model PSB42LSRBBV is < 1 year old and has developed a howling sound in the freezer compartment. The evaporator fan seemed to be the culprit but maybe it's being caused by something else?
The fan has been replaced by GE, but the noise persists. We have a new motherboard and some other transformer-looking component that will be delivered soon. Based on reading this thread I think this may fix it, but the GE tech doesn't think it will...
Does the motherboard problems described in this thread extend to the newer built in GE models. I think the unit is actually manufactured by Samsung, or at least some components are.
Really could use some advice and ammo to take this up with GE before my warranty expires. Thanks in advance.

I'm afraid I do not know however I would think the lasted products being marketed should already incorporate the newest electronic control designs GE has as well.

The other affected models are made in the USA.

That wouldn't have anything to do with where the appliance was actually manufactured. Individual components could be sourced from anywhere around the world. Electronic components and motors are common coming from various big Asian conglomerates as they can be made cheaper there.

Coil Filter-Reactor?
I opened the box to look at the parts GE sent ... in addition to the motherboard, they've sent a transformer-looking device called a Coil Filter-Reactor. Pretty intimidating name, but a little research yielded that these components are used to temper and moderate voltage fluctuations and some are specifically set to reduce harmonic noise. I think it's something related to the mother board or the voltage going to the fan so maybe that'll fix it.
I am very hopeful that when these parts get installed, the humming and howling will go away. GE is supposed to come back for the umpteenth time this week so we'll see if those parts fix it. I'll post an update either way.
