GE Icemaker overfilling

Hi,
Great Forum. Lots of info. here. I have a GE side by side, model TPX21BRXABB, 1995 0r 1996 vintage. My icemaker is overfilling. It appears that the water comes on fo like 6 seconds or so, stops, then comes on again after about 2 minutes, causing the tray to overfill. Not sure if the icemaker is falty of the valve. I don't have a problem replacing either one, I just want to replace the right one.
Any help would be appreciated

If the icemaker side of the water valve WAS was being powered during the 'second fill', a problem in the icemaker is the only place I can see that would cause such a symptom.

If the water valve was NOT being powered during this second fill, a problem with the water valve or water pressure to the valve, could be responsible although if it is occurring with any timed regularity, I doubt either of those would be likely.

Thanks Dan. I have been paying more attention lately and the second fill does not occur with any regularity. Sometime it fills and sometimes it doesn't.
I am now wondering if I may have messed up something a few weeks ago, when it appeared that there was no ice being made. I took off the front cover and it looked like the gears were stuck and not turning. I popped of the larger gear and put back on. Maybe that gear is supposed to go on a certain way?! Could that be the problem?
If not I was thinking of running a bead of caulk around the tray to allow for the added water, as it still makes ice fine.

Than determining whether the valve is being power at the time may need to be done to try to isolate the cause further.

The icemaker should only fill once per revolution. I can't see how putting the gear on the wrong way should change that but there might be a slim possibility.

That would be attacking the symptom (overfilling) but not the problem (the actual cause). That is not the way to go about servicing an appliance (or anything else for that matter).

IF it is overfilling, while such a fix might alleviate the symptom now, there's nothing to say the problem is going to stay exactly the same. If you do not find and correct the actual cause, it could get worse with time and you'll be back to square one. A further problem could even manifest itself at a time when you aren't around to catch it, making a real mess.

Fix it once and fix it right!
