Tips on Removing Ice Maker?

Howdy all, I've got a Kenmore M-1 icemaker that needs replacing. I bought a new one and am ready to install it but I can't get the old one out! It appears to be mounted by 2 screws but there's no way i can get pliers to them. Any advice on what works best to get this crazy thing out?

p.s. I tried a rubber mallet but that didn't work. haha.

the two screws are into a flat speed nut inside the freezer compartment. it may have gotten "un-loose" throughout the years. try jamming a screwdriver into the freezer side so the nut don't revolve and try to remove the screws.

Screws are meant to be manipulated using a screwdriver not pliers.

The icemaker mounting screws in many cases don't need to be removed, just loosened... if that. The icemaker will often have key-hole slots on it that just fit over the screw heads where it 'hangs'. But without knowing which exact refrigerator model is involved, all we can do is guess.

I still can't get it off... but it does appear to "hang." I just can't get it unstuck.

And i didn't explain myself correctly earlier... the 'screws' actually don't have a place for a screwdriver. it looks like a nut without a hole in the middle.

As you can hopefully see from the photo, there is no way to physically loosen the screws. I can't get any tools up against the edges of the nut.

Your picture shows 1/4" hex head screws (see image below). They are very common in the appliance industry.

Those need a "nut driver" or a screwdriver with interchangeable bits (see the following link). On the latter, just use the screwdriver without a bit installed in its shaft.

Once loosened just a bit, the icemaker can be lifted slightly and then off the screw heads to remove it.

Dan, thank you so much. I'm running out and getting one right now. I've been doing home repair on my house for 7 years and have never come across a need for one of these. (never had to fix an appliance before.)

I really appreciate your help. I was contorting myself and my pliers into unimaginable positions while trying to get in this freezer. lol. and doing quite a bit of cussing. Thank you!
