Badger 5 InSinkerator

My two-year-old Badger 5 isn't working properly. It is very noisy, making crunchy sounds, and stops working every few minutes. The power is fine- the hum is always there- but the hammers don't spin freely using the allen wrench. I can't see anything jammed up in there, so I'm wondering if something is out of alignment. Should I keep spinning with the allen wrench, call a mechanic, or just scrap it and get a new one?

Thanks for any thoughts,
AK

the hammers wouldn't be affected by using the allen wrench. all the allen wrench does is fit into the armature shaft and frees up any jam between the grinder plate and the grinding chamber. the hammers are fastened to two loose fitting rivets on the outside [inside] of the grinding plate. if there's a grinding sound it could be something underneath the grinder plate between the plate and the internal end bell of the motor. in this "end bell" is the rotating seal.

** I can't see anything jammed up in there, so I'm wondering if something is out of alignment. **

No. Something is jamming it which apparently can't be seen with just a cursory look (ie. without dismantling it). It might need to be dismounted to get a more thorough examination.

If it is no longer under any warranty (see the following link) and there is not something just lodged in there, chances are it may not be economical to repair for your problem description in which case just replacing it might be the route to go.

Thanks for the insights! I took it apart, figuring I was going to have to replace it either way, and found a PENNY inside. I have no idea how it got in there- my boyfriend blames the cat. Anyway, I put the thing back together, sans penny, and it works like a dream.
