Whirpool Ice Maker Trouble

I have a Whirlpool side by side Freezer/Refrigerator.

Model Number: ED22QFXHT00
Serial Number: SK0229552
Date Mfg: 01-00

We bought the unit new in 2000. We have moved twice since and brought it with us. I have changed the filter several times as needed during its lifetime.

A couple of weeks ago one of the plastic pieces in the door flap where the ice comes out became broken, and the level/door assembly wouldn't function correctly... I figure, "no problem, just get the ice out the old fashioned way." however, last week, the icemaker stopped dumping. I figured it had gotten frozen up, maybe some warm air was leaking into the freezer through the door flap, whatever. I got a hair dryer and defrosted everything, and the icemaker arms started to turn and dumped the ice cubes that were at that time in the tray... i figured this was a good thing. However, now it will not fill back up with water. I have tried several times to get it "restarted" but no luck.

This afternoon I filled the trays up manually with water and waited to see if it would dump... it would not. I got tired of waiting for it to work and so got some wire and jumped the "H" and "T" connections, which I read is supposed to start it up... well the arms turned but could not push out the ice, and I noticed that the heating element did not get warm. I used the hair dryer again to warm things up and then the arms were able to push the cubes out... but after they went around to "home", still no water filled the tray.

What should I try next? Is the ice maker shot? i know the lines are not frozen, I check that first. There isn't any water in the icemaker supply line. What have I missed?

Thank you for the help.

Jason

There are also other tests that can be initiated from the icemaker like seeing if the water valve is at least capable of functioning. See the following link:

LINK > Whirlpool 'Modular' Compact Crescent-Mold Icemaker

** Is the ice maker shot? **

If the problem is in the icemaker itself, it is either replace the 'module' or the whole icemaker which is often the more time and cost effective way to to.

LINK > Icemaker 'Module'

LINK > Icemaker Assembly

Dan,

Thanks much for the reply. I did some additional tests this afternoon from the link you provided... I found when I did the jumpers that the water valve DOES work and will fill the tray. I could not get the heating element to work. The icemaker right now appears to be "stuck" partway through the cycle... the arms have turned and have stopped against the ice.

Should I assume from this that the heating element is shot, or could it be another problem? I raised the arm for the present time to stop the icemaker, but I was also considering defrosting the icemaker again so it doesn't keep trying to turn. Any additional suggestions you can make would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Jason

No, it should actually be checked to be sure... since it can easily. (Not that it would be cost effective to replace either - see the following link).

LINK > Ice Mold and Heater Asm.

The resistance values expected for it are stated at the link I provided previously.
