Old Kenmore Washer 800 problem

Re: Sears Kenmore 800 washer from the 1960's. Top loader.

Rebuilt 15 years ago and I intend to keep it running if possible. Turning the selector dial will not engage the agitator. Water will fill. Lights go on. No spinning cycles will work anywhere on the dial. Suds selection will not engage the agitator either. If left on, there is a hum and a burning smell will result after a while in the area of the selector dial . Currently have the instrument panel down for a look see. Do I have to replace the whole selector switch or can I get in there and fix something? Just finished a load and it decided to quit just like that. Thanks for any advice.

It sounds like you may have a timer problem. IF that's the case the whole timer would have to be replaced or sent away to be repaired. Parts for the timer (besides in rare cases its motor) are not available separately.

BTW. A new replacement timer (# 89834) does not appear to be available for your washer model any longer so getting the original repaired would be required... if defective.

The little motor attached to the timer seems to be running very slowly with a slight overheated smell. The little gear or cog seems to barely move. Are motors available? My parts list seems to recommend a 50 cycle but the part has a 60 cy imprinted on it. Thanks.

Apparently the timer motor is running as it should; just a little noisy. Something is loading up and smoking inside the timer itself. I am going to disassemble it tomorrow and see what is what.

Be careful! If you damage it in the process it may not even be able to be repaired afterward and as I said, a new one is not available.

those motors are called hysteresis synchronous motors. they operate at 120 volts and synchronize themselves with the 60 hz line frequency. check out anyplace that manufactures timers - i.e. paragon, tork maybe even grainger for a replacement. make sure you get the correct gear ratio.
