VHS tape - broken cover

I have a VHS tape with a broken cover (the part that covers the tape and flips up inside the machine to play) that I would like to record to DVD on my dual recorder. If I put the tape in the machine as usual, will it play normally? Do I risk damaging the tape?

It is a very significant personal tape that I don't want to risk permanently damaging.

Thanks.

that cover is normally rotated open by the mechanism as the tape is fed down to the tape transport. its function is a dust cover for the tape.

On most VHS tapes the cases are very similar. The part in question can be removed from a good case and swapped over to your valued tape. Just make sure the cases are identical. You can carefully pry one end of the good cover off and replace it on the other tape. Be sure to note the orientation of the small spring that closes the cover when you remove it. Good luck!
