Hi. Anyone know about CD players?

I have a TEAC cd player in my separates system and it has a problem playing CDs.

When I try to change track, it will quite often fail to work. It seems to be a problem when the spinny thing isnt gripping the disc properly, and the disc seems to be spinning too fast....

....is this something that can happen?

If I press eject, the tray opens with the disc still spinning!

just some more information. ive just been doing some research and investigating.

The cd seems to be slipping on the "puck"
Ive looked at my cd player. there is a plastic puck, and a metal weighted round thing on the top.

There is no rubber grippers anywhere to be seen. (which I expected to see).

Ive attached a coin on top of the weight thing, which seems to have helped grip the CD better, but it is still slipping (im guessing cause there is no grip)

Does anyone know if I can get some sort of adhisive rubber grips which might help? or am I clutching at straws now?

the motor platter has rubber grips on it. the upper "puck" has a light tension spring on it which spins free when the motor operates. it is more/less free floating on top of the cd disk. there is a very small motor connected to a lead screw which changes the position of the read/write head [laser] of the drive to change tracks. if there is ANY dust what so ever on the upper puck it will put a drag on the cd. the disk spins at a constant rate [rpm-s] when you eject a disk it may be still spinning - this is of no concern. there is no brake on the drive. the disk transfer mechanism is just a plastic carriage. the disk lifts up when the transport is in the IN or on position.

Ive tinkered with it for a while and I dont think the problem is with the grip of the cd....

it plays normally most of the time. but occasionaly when trying to skip tracks, the cd starts spinning crazy fast then just spins to a stop.

ive cleaned the lense with isopropyl alcohol.

whats this about a screw that can be adjusted? should i look for this?

you shouldn't use alcohol on the laser lens because its only made of plastic. if it were glass it would be different. there is no adjustment for tracking. the lead screw I'm talking about moves the head in or out as its tracking the information on the disk which is a series of valleys and "mountains" they call them "pits" on the aluminum surface.

what I've tried with mine is to completely remove the top plate and see if the disk spins without overspeed. sometimes it works, sometimes it won't. basically the puck keeps the disk centered on the motor hub which has a cone affair that almost fits the hole in the cd. you could try extending the spring out a touch to apply more tension to the disk. other than that you may need a new drive. like anything mechanical they just wear out!

hmm, I think you maybe right. The problem seems to happen with cd-r's.... which is what I listen to mostly.

removing the top plate stops it picking up the disk at all. I dont really know how to extend the spring

its a shame cause its a fairly new cd player ive only had it a couple of years and I havent used to that much.
