door does not close tight

I have a outward-opening exterior door with a gap between the door and the jamb so that the deadbolt barely reaches. I'm thinking about adding a piece of wood down the jamb to bring it out to meet the door. Any reason that would not work?

my thoughts are that the whole door casing was not centered in the rough opening of the door. remove the moulding around the door and check the spacing of the casing to the studs that forms the door opening. if the door casing is nailed into place and you find you can move the casing left to right or right to left to center it, use a sawz-all with a metal cutting blade and cut through the nails. then you can shim the casing with shims to center it. Use long sheetrock screws to refasten it. then re-apply the mouldings with finishing nails. to just put a strip of wood on either side (hinge or jamb sides) may work but will create a weak area and detract from the appearance of the door.
