Adding Ventilation to an interior door

I need to either add ventilation to an interior door or replace it with a louver door. it is the door that leads to the utility room where the HVAC unit is. Ideally I would like to be able to cut out the lower panels and add in some type of ventilation.

I am a novice and am not sure how to go about doing this. Is it even possible?

Any suggestions or “how to” instructions would be extremely helpful.

You mention that the HVAC unit is in the utility room. Does the HVAC unit have a return duct already attached to the living space? If yes, the HVAC unit should not need any further venting.

If no, I would go with a louvered door. Since you said "panels", I assume that the existing door has 4 or 6 raised panels in its construction. You could get these out, but whatever type of vent or grille that you insert would not look good.

In almost all cases now a utility room with HVAC must have vented doors.
If it were me I'd replace the existing doors with louvered doors that are available at most big box stores.
