dissimilar wires

Good morning,

Does anyone know if one is allowed, by code, to run dissimilar task wiring thru the same hole thru a joist? Here's an example, if I ran heating wiring and lighting wiring or if I ran the dryer wire and outlet wires thru the same 1" hole in the joist.

Thanks,

Craig

It's fine to run multiple AC cables through the same hole as long as there is plenty of room and the cables aren't getting squeezed at all. Otherwise drill another hole. You also need to limit the number of cables to 3, and if one cable is 8 gauge, then max should be that cable and one more 2 conductor cable.

But, you do not want to run a thermostat wire (heating wire) and AC cables together through the same holes. You need to keep low voltage wires and AC wires at least 2 feet apart to insure no interferance occurs. These types of wires can cross perpendicular to one another, but no close parrellel runs.

And if these 1 inch holes are in wall studs then you should install a nail plate over the edge of each one of these studs to prevent a drywall nail from penetrating the wires, it's safe insurance to protect your wiring.
