Process of elimination

1) Do you have an existing fixture in the location that the proposed fan will be installed?
2) Is this fixture switched from a switch on the wall, or a pull cord.

Ceiling Fan

Here's a diagram for a ceiling fan recieving its feed from the canopy box location. If the feed were from a wall switch (existing) wiring's the same

fan/light switch

If you just have one switch presently controlling your fixture then you'll need to install different wiring between the fan and the switch box if you want to control the fan and the light separetly. You'll need a 3 conductor cable for this.

And, if the power comes into the switch box first, then the following link will show you how to connect the switches and the fan/light.
