Digital ceiling fan control and Hunter fan question.

I am looking at a Hunter indoor/outdoor fan to put under a deck cover. I read the install instructions for Hunter fans and it says not to use a digital speed control. As luck would have it, I had just installed a control that controls the fan and lights. In it's instructions it says to check with the fan manufure to see if they accept digital controls. My question is... would it damage the Hunter fan if I still used the digital control? If so is the most damage done at the slower speeds or close to high speeds? I can purchase the Hunter remote control speed control but they got bad reviews for reliability in one of the forums. Do you know of an outdoor fan that would work with this control that is not too expensive? Thanks for any help.

irregardless of where the damage might occur - low speed end or high speed end, the instructions say not to use a digital control! try lutron fan control if your skiddish about hunter.

Thanks for your reply. The fan control/dimmer I installed is a Lutron Skylark model S2-LF rated for 2.5 A for fan and 300 W for lights. The important notes section item 6. says: Use an S2-LF only with fans marked "Suitable for use with solid-state fan-speed controls". I don't actually have a fan yet I was just looking on Home Depot and found the Hunter. It had a place to look at the installation manual and that is were I found the notice to not use a digital control. I will look for that notice on any fan I am considering. I could also just get the Hunter 3 speed control and replace the control I just put in... seems like the best option right now. I think there are digital controls that limit current and there are those that limit voltage. If the control I have limits current then it should be ok only it might cause the buzzing sound.... I was thinking that someone on this forum might know definently.

with so many fans on the market including the imports it's really hard to recommend any one type. I've had good luck with a 42 inch hunter with a battery remote. grainger's has fans that can be tandemly connected and controlled off one control
