Need help disconnecting a 3-way switch

I currently have a kitchen light that is controlled by a 3-way swith. I installed a new ceiling fan that has a remote control. The remote is designed to be mounted into the switch box, but there is currently a switch there. I would like to just remove one of the 3 way switches so I can install the remote in it's place.

I am not sure what I need to do with the wires when I remove the switch. In the switch I want to remove there is one white and one black wire going into either side on the top of the switch and one red wire in the bottom. Can I just tie the wires and if so, which do I tie.

Thanks for any help!

Kevin

In other words, you are replacing an existing light only fixture, switched 3way, with a combination fan/light with a remote and you want a constant power source for the remote, correct?

You need to identify the hot pair, be it in the ceiling box or in the other 3way SW location, as well as the conductors in that location.

the way a conventional three way is wired, you pick up the hot and one side of the three wire in one box and on the other end you take off the load cable and the other side of the three wire. What I'm saying is that the hot wire (black) goes to the odd screw in one box, the black and red are your travelers to the remote box and the neutrals (white) are wirenutted together. At the other end, the black of the two wire cable goes to the odd screw, the red/black of the three wire goes back to the first box, and the white neutrals are wirenutted together.
ok, now if you want to connect up a fan/lite - you won't be able to independently control the fan and light from each other in a conventional switch hook-up, but you say you got the remote. So if you want to connect up the fan to the existing two wire going to your ceiling fixture, go ahead connect the black and blue together and the black on the two wire and wire nut them together, then take the white from the two wire cable and connect to the fan white. at the remote box, take the two travelers and wirenut them together this will be your (new) hot - connect this to the fan controller. the load side of the controller will go to the black going up to the fan, the white(s) will also be wire nutted together. The far remote switch will have no effect since the travelers are connected together - whatever switch position your have the three way, the travelers will always be hot.
