I have to do repairs to some areas of my roof and I will be working very close to the service wires (3 wire system) to the house. I am nervous about working in this area. What I would like to know is what precautions do I need to take in order to work around these wires? What are the dangers in this area?
The service lateral ( wires coming from the pole) going to the "house hook" - the porcelain insulator - are unfused going back to the distribution transformer. There should be crimp on or bolt on lateral to entrance terminals that are covered with either a polyethylene snap on cover AND tape -or - just tape. If you can avoid ANY contact it would be best, but if you have to be around them be extra careful. The bare ground terminal is connected to the "messenger cable" from the "crib" line. The crib line refers to the triplex conductors going from the transformer to pole to pole.
Bottom line don't touch them unless you are properly trained.
