extending 220

I am remodeling my kitchen and the rangs moving to a new location farther away from the service panel. The existing wiring is not long enough to reach the new location. I have heard that it is not safe to extend the wiring by adding additional wire and connecting with screw-on caps. In other words, that the wire should be on contiguous piece. Does this hold true?

yes. remove the old wiring and put in new. splices in this high amperage device can bring problems. as this is going to be a new installation (technically speaking) must be a four wire with a four wire receptacle. pigtail off the range must also be a four wire.
