220 outlet hookup

I want to hook up a 220 outlet for a air conditioner. I went out and bought 10/3 wire. It has a black, white, and green wire. I need to know how to hook it up to a duel 30 amp breaker. Every where I look it says something about a red wire but this don't have one can someone help me?

What size circuit does the A/C require? Is it 30a or did you just assume 30a?

Either way, 10/3 DOES have a red wire. It is quite liekly that you did not need 10/3 for this as a straight 240v circuit does not need a neutral, only two hots and a ground. You could have used 10/2 and colored the white red or black.

There are two hot connections on the receptacle and one ground. The two hots from the breaker go to the receptacle and the ground goes to ground on both ends.
Using your 10/3 just use the black and red and cap off the white on both ends.

Sounds like you have "power cord" type wire. Are you running this circuit in the wall, from the panel, or are you just making an extension cord?

If you are actually installing a "circuit" it sounds like you do not have the right type of wire.

How about some pictures>??

That makes a big difference. That sounds like rubber cord.
If this is rubber cord then it is in fact 10/3. Rubber cord includes the ground in the 10/3 designation, NM cable does not. If that were NM cbale it would be "10/2 w/ground". The "w/ground" is assumes since all cable is grounded these days.

Cord CANNOT be used for permanent building wire.

Tell us exactly what it says on the cable.
