Portable Generator to run Sump Pump

I'm here in Cedar Rapids where we are having a record flood. My problem so far is my sump pump is working overtime. My concern is if I should lose electrical power and my sump pump won't work. I know I can install a battery back-up but I would rather buy a portable generator to run the pump. I checked at Northern Tools and they have a 1000W for $150. My question is will this be enough to run my sump pump?My pump is cycleing about every 3-4 minutes. Im not concerned with running anything else I just need enough to run the sump pump. Can I get by with the 1000W generator? Thanks!

Well, even if it is a "real" 1/2hp you should be fine, even at startup. Just don't expect to run anything else while the pump is running.
