Unhappy Cutting down a door frame

Just bought a new inside 6 panel door & frame to replace an existing old bathroom door. I measured everything but the width of the frame- thought this was all "standard". So, now I have a frame that's 2.75" wide (thick) and a frame that's about 4.5" thick. How can I cut off about 1.75" to make this fit? ( or should I ?)

the original door rough opening may have a stud and a jack stud. the 2X4 is 1 5/8" thick so if you take out one 2X4 each side, the jack stud will still be there and the new door frame should fit inside. I wouldn't destroy the new casing if I could help it.
