How to repair squirrel hole near roof?

Hello. Upon buying our first home, we discovered that squirrels had taken up residence inbetween our first and second floor. Using a wood plank and some steel wool, we've blocked off their entrance*, but the wood and steel wool is only a short-term fix. Below the wood is a bit of rusting tin, which is bound to wear (and get chewed) away when the squirrels try to come back this winter.

Is there an easy way to patch - or cover - the tin? There's another hole in back that we stuffed steel wool in, and that will need to be fixed too.

Any suggestions for plugging these holes in a non-hideous way would be very much appreciated (We plan on painting the wood to match the exterior.)

* They would sit in the gutter and chew at the rusted tin just below the roofing

You can have the tin replaced or covered with aluminum, there are many colors so matching it to one you like should be no problem at all.
If your up for a DIY, Lowes or H.Depot sell aluminum in rolls (mainly white) buy a small roll and fabricate a cover for the existing area and using aluminum nails also available at any large hardware attach it to the existing area.

Thanks so much! How hard is it to use aluminum nails? Do you need a nail gun or merely a good hammer? (We're not especially handy...)

All you need is a hammer and the ability to use one it's that easy.

Just make sure you don't wail away at the nails like there is no tomorrow or you will end up denting your new aluminum fascia.
