Question repointing: mortar necessary, or will silicone do?

I have an older brick house built in the mid 1920's that needs a bit of repointing. I've seen some silicone products that you can use for this purpose, it seems like it might be easier.

Which route should I go, mortar or silicone?

thanks, gigo

They also make motar in a tube for tuck pointing. I think it has an additive to prevent cracking as well.

Thanks Bob, I'll see if I can find some of that to compare as well.

some things meant to make life easier are a pain in the "##$#$%$" the tried and true method is tuck pointing with three parts sand and one part portland and some water and really pack it in!
