Chimney rebuild

Our 1903 home was subdivided into apartments in the eighties, and we are in the process of restoring it- There is a beautiful original fireplace, but the chimney was removed starting at the roofline and the opening was roofed over- This made the fireplace non-functioning of course- We plan on restoring the roofline portion of the chimney- My husband's construction skills are very good, and he has worked with masonry before, but not with a chimney- For safety's sake, we would like to find directions on how to properly do this- Can anyone help?

Chimney rebuilding is not for first timers, no matter how good your masonry skills are. The flue will either have to be clay or if your going to install a whole new flue system then it will need to be sleeved with S/S all the way down to the fire box.
One thing to remember is that the top of the chimney must be 2' taller than anything within 10' of the chimney.
Very often when they knock down chimney's they damage the existing flue, this must be checked and if cracked replace any and all damaged flue tiles.
