painting decorative brick

i have red decorative brick (6" X 1/2") installed with mortar that is from the 1970's. Can it be painted? should i faux paint it, and what about the gray mortar. please help

Yes, at least it is done quite a bit around here. Brick and mortar and all...... I'd use a good primer designed for the surface first. The faux finish is an interesting idea, especially over the brick. What type of faux design were you thinking about??
