harsh brick

Hello! We just bought a home and we have a red brick facade around our wood stove. I like brick but this is very harsh looking; the brick looks very new and very bright. This past summer, I saw a show on HGTV where the designer used a whitewash type of product with a blotting technique to make the brick look a little more aged and a little softer. It really looked great; very natural. I can't seem to find any reference on their site as to how to do this. Any ideas? I do thank you for your feedback.
