help with floors

I recently bought an old house and ripped up the carpet, had the wood floors sanded and refinished. They look nice except some stains that would not come up in a few spots. The problem I am having is the staircase which is old has broken stairs that need replacing. I have not a clue as to who to call for estimates. Do I replace the stair case or fix the steps? Is it expensive to do so? Is it something I can do on my own and if so, where would I look for information on how to do something like this? I have searched high and low on the internet and can find nothing. Any help appreciated.
