Carpet pad

Replacing 120 yards of carpet in basement. Concrete floor. Existing carpet is jute-back, industrial type. Not a shag or sculptured, just a flat surface. Is tacked down around edges and lays on foam type pad, approx 3/8" thick.

Question: Can we roll up existing carpet, remove pad and then use existing carpet as pad for new carpet. Would save about $500 on new pad and lots of labor removing exicting carpet.

Hope my question makes sense. Thanks!

Bob

In my experience, whenever I have removed carpet, I have wanted to replace the padding as well. Either it beginning to wear, or is too dirty.

My advice is to take it up, and see how it looks. You'll know if you can reuse it. Can't hurt to check.

Anyone else?

I hope its not too late, but the warranties on the carpet would be toast. Old carpet or old carpet pad is not suitable for use as new pad. You will notice the carpet not performing as expected. Rippling, seams coming apart, wearing quickly...bad things.

Advice from the last frontier!

Putting new carpet on old pads voids the warranty? Thanks for the info!
