stumped on floor

Hello, I have a question about the area in front of fireplace. There was sone ceramic tile laid out from brick, but it was laid on pine plank floor with thin set.needless to say it started to come loose as floor moved.

My problem is the brick is only 1/4 in above the wood.what can i do to keep transition even? i just want to bring an oval out from the front of the brick. I do not plan to use the fireplace but set a wood burning heater in the front opening.i have plenty of side clearance but would like a little more in the front area.

If i have to lay 1/2 backer board then 1/4 tile i'll have at least a 1/2 step down to the brick portion.tile will be transitioned to carpet.
