Baseboards and Concrete Floors

We are trying to refinish our concrete slab basement on a budget. For the hallway, we are leaving the concrete floors (painted) and installing baseboards. In some places the baseboards do not meet the concrete floors. Should I caulk these gaps? In some places, the gap approaches 1/2", and I don't know if caulk is the best option. Does anyone have any suggestions or alternate materials to seal these gaps? Thanks!

I think you should leave the gaps... in the future, you may want to lay carpet and you wouldn't want to rip-up your baseboards. Just my opinion.

I think you are right. Plus, we decided that a strip of quarter round would be much more flexible and would hide the gaps.

I had the same problem when I built a bedroom in my basement. What I did was make kerf cuts in the bottom of the 3 inch molding then used joint compound to cover the cuts, sanded and painted over them and you could never tell the cuts were even there.
