Carpeted stairs want to change to Oak stairs

I would like remove the carpeting from my staircase and install oak treads and risers. My question is do I need to tear out the treads and risers or can I trim off the overhang on the treads, install new risers over the old ones and install the new oak treads over the existing ones. Also I have see a carpet runnner going up the center of the some oak staircases. Is there a way to only put the oak on the outer edges of the steps and have a carpet section in the center of the stairs. I thought this may make it a little less expensive (oak treads and risers). If anyone has any info or has done this I would really like some info on it. Thanks

EZTREAD can help!

Check out EZTREAD on the internet. EZTREAD is specially designed treads and risers to fit over an existing staircase. Treads and risers are available in Oak as well as other species both prefinished and unfinished. All products for your stairs are available through EZTREAD. Acme Stairs is also an internet dealer who carries EZTREAD. Check them both out on the internet.

We wanted the same look because we have oak flooring throughout the rest of our house and had carpeted stairs too. What we ended up doing was buying an inexpensive table saw and two looong tread boards. We measured them out ourselves and then conditioned, stained and finished w/ poly. They look great and we didn't end up with extra steep stairs (cost or height.)

We decided to tile the front of the stair case w/ ceramic tile - the same as around our fireplace to tie the house together.

Took longer but we have a much richer look for a price that didn't break the bank like purchasing new risers/treads.
