bamboo flooring

I am considering to install bamboo flooring in my bedrooms. I have heard so much praises about it, plus I like the texture finish it has over the hardwood.
My question is, has anyone install it yet? Is there any precaution I should take when installing it? Should I lay a plastic barrier down first for water proof?
I live in California. The house is an older house thus it has raised foundation (not concrete slab). The existing floor is hardwood. The hardwood floor cannot be refinish because it has multiple water damages. A few of the flooring pros advised me the same. Therefore I'm just going to lay the bamboo on top of the existing hardwood. That should be ok, right?
Thanks.
