squeaky floor

I live in a downstairs condo apartament. The noise from the upstair neighbor's footsteps is unbearable. Their floor cracks with every stept that they take and my whole room shakes when they take heavier steps. Unfortunately, they are not very cooperative so I want to try to fix it from downstairs without their help. Is there anything that can be done?

Are the joists exposed? If so you could try cross bracing the joists with 1X3 slats. This will keep the joists from flexing sideways. If the joists in your room is finished, short of tearing down the ceiling materials there isn't anything you can do.
