Pouring concrete floors

I'm ripping out my old basement concrete and putting a new one in. I heard that I need to put a vapor barrier on top of the sand and than concrete over that. Is that true?
If so do I use a special barrier material or can I just use 5 mil polyethelyne plastic?

5 or 6 mil plastic will be ok. be sure to use a 4 inch X 4 inch screen in the middle of the mix to keep your slab from cracking.
