Garage Door Opener

My 1/2 HP Craftsman motor makes a buzzing noise (twice) but does not move the chain. Any suggestions for this problem? I have it disengaged at this time and it still does nothing but buzz, so my assumption is that it is not the safety or door. But the chain should at least move and doesn't.
Thanks,
Ben8

This might sound stupid, but try hitting the motor when you push the button and see if runs. I've had to do this before on different motors. The starter gets sticky.

Inside the motor compartment is a reversing starter for the motor. This is mechanically interlocked with a lever so that bothe contact sets don't energize at the same time. If this mechanism hangs - nothing works. Rapping it will fix it for a short time but it will hang again. Look into the problem or change the contactors. Sometimes the copper "shading coils" loosen up a bit. These are just heavy copper windings around the edges of the iron armature of the starter.
