Garage Door Opener Motor only spins

Hi all,

I've got an old Genie Pro88 screw drive door opener. Just recently it developed a crack in the mounting bracket. I disengaged the door, ran the motor. I clicked the remote, the motor smoked, and I unplugged it.

After repairing and re-hanging the cracked mount, I was able to get the door to open and close properly. However, after three days, a new problem developed - now the motor only spins, and only when the remote button is held down.

Any help on what I should look to repair would be appreciated.
